After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Mazzer Kony doser 'chute'

edited January 1970 in Grinders
I am interested in a Kony but before purchasing would like some advice on how well (or not) the doser system works.
Perhaps more specifically, I refer to the build up of ground coffee in the chute that some (most?) machines require before eventually falling into the doser.
Does the Kony suffer from this problem  eg) at the end of a grinding session is there going to be a dose or two of ground coffee stuck in the chute thereby requiring removal prior to the next 'fresh' grind ?
If this is the case is the chute readily accessible for cleaning purposes without removing the doser unit?
Thanks for any advice

  • Its a commercial grinder, and depends on your intended use. If you intend to use commercially, it will be ok so dont worry about it. Manage the grinder properl;y / switch off and run down the grinds in the dispenser after each peak period, and fire uit up just as peak starts to hit. Too many people lookin for stuff to worry about unncecessaruily. ;) If your intended use is domestic, afraid this is the wrong grinder for you. Too many people in the domestic market at the moment wanting to buy commercial stuff but it is the wrong type of equip for the purpose. And therefoire represents a large amount of wasted money and yeah, youd foind it a chore to go in the dispenser to clear up after each session. If domestic use, suggest you look at some kind of excellent good quality domestic. This site has a banner up top of the page with some examples. check it out and starting from the best one there and going down in quality, go say Macap M5 then Rancilio Rocky Doseless. Going down one more level from there (but I dont see it in therer) I'd say you could go the Iberital Challenge doseless. Would nt go any "less" than that for high quality deomstic use. Again if domestic use (or even in average comercial / cafe use) going thje conical burrs is no more than hype. You wouldnt grind enough coffee, or grind the coffee for long enough, to heat up the grinds enough, to make any difference anyone wouild ever pick in the brew. Scouts honour! G.
  • Gonzo, Thanks for your detailed response. I can understand from a more 'practical' viewpoint maybe the Kony is the wrong machine for domestic use...even if matched with a high end espresso machine. Guess I got carried away having read too many reviews extolling the virtues of conical vs flat. Many thanks for your input.
  • why don't you go with a doserless Rancillio Rocky grinder, the price is good (I paid $420 for one, including delivery, on ebay).  You don't have to worry about build up of grind with a doserless version, and you and even (heaven forbid) switch to decaf and back again without too much difficulty! Your coffee is only as good as your grinder! ACG
