After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Best non Espresso coffee methods

Okay, so "The Worst Coffee" thread has me thinking I should maybe try another brewing method in the office.

I currently use a percolator. I grind fresh each morning and drive to work, prepare and turn on the machine. I make enough for whovere else wants one making sure there's none left over. I take enough ground coffee to work for a second brew after lunch.  I know it's not ideal and will soon take a grinder in to work.

So, what alterantive brewing method would recommend I try or should I stick with the perc and why??

    you could always go for an electric version. The deli in my local shopping centre has a greek coffee making kit. With an electrically heated pot. I've been wondering if it would be any good. I expect the vacuum packed pre-ground coffee that comes with it would be less than perfect.

    I've assumed drip also covers pourover devices like V60 & Clever Dripper. The Abid CCD is my preferred non-espresso brew method. So easy to deal with at 5am when I'm just out of bed.

    I only put down aeropress because there wasn't an option for cold process. I assume this is for hot brewing methods.

    I think you have all been sold by Aerobie's and the local resellers marketing  ;) Best cups for me come from Pourover (hario sock) or Syphon. Both have their good and bad points but for my palate it gets the clarity/oil/flavour balance about right for me at home. Still use the plunger at work sometimes and some of the better coffee businesses in Melbourne are putting them back in to serve customers with. Not mentioned either but Cold Drip or CP rates a mention too  :)

    Tongue in cheek comment aside, I have had some of my most enjoyable brews from an Aeropress (with Coava disk) As already pointed out, the survey doesn't include all the alternate brewing methods (pourover, cold press, various forms of Atomic, .
    Not mentioned either but Cold Drip or CP rates a mention too  :)

    I have come to like the Aeropress more with the Coava Disk in rather than the paper. I only have the original more course one at this stage when I brought the Kone. More pocket money needed to be spent ;D I suppose more of what I was getting at is there is a huge range of manual brewed options out there and they all rate a mention and or being tried by everyone. Would happily tick most of the boxes in the survey and add some more.

    To be brutally honest, I prefer all "manual" brewing methods over espresso.  There is so much more character out there than the thimble of espresso you see in a lot of Sydney establishments these days. Life's too short, and so are the shots in Sydney.

    Sorry guys, goes to show how much I know... been focused on Espresso for so long.... I changed Drip to Drip/Pourover and then was going to add cold press but thought we would possibly need to start the poll again so I just left it as is. Feel free to expand on your votes in here. Maybe I should have also renamed the thread to best coffee for the office as there are a few limiting factors in an office - like no stove top, anyway, maybe that warrants another thread where every possible method is listed and people can place their votes - I am sure Admin or mods could rename and start a new topic. Also, I have arranged a swap on some coffee hardware and should be trialling an Aeropress at work over the next couple of weeks. Everyone in the office thinks I am a nut already, I can only imagine their faces when yet another method gets introduced. I have had a budget espresso machine in there, 2 percolators, the kettle and a plunger already :)

    Is that the .10 one BF?  I've got the .08 coava disk and am loving it!! Agree that there are a lot of other methods, but the reason I love the aeropress is that it's simple and easy to use/clean (especially with the Coava disk).

    Haven't tried a coava disk, I got mine (over in the UK) with a large pack of paper filters and still using those. The ease of keeping clean is a huge plus. the suggestion in the manual that you should reuse the paper filters to save the environment made me smile, but having tried it, I think that the second cup out of a filter does taste better. Might be imagination, or might be paper (bleach?) taint. It gladdens my scottish heart to save the tiny amount that a new filter costs :D

    I'm a big fan of the Clever Coffee Dripper - for ease of use, and for control over the variables (infusion times) in the brewing process Also I just really enjoy the flavour profiles that come out of this process - admittedly coffee needs to be roasted (not toasted) to suit - as coffee roasted for espresso tends to tastes ashy in this application But that's fine by me as that means either more home roasts - or tracking down suppliers who roast for this application :)

    Opps I think I put mine under the wrong one, put it under vacuum.  I use a syphon as my other type of brewer, I love the clarity and cleanness it brings to a coffee.

    i think most peoples' experience of percolator is perc'ed coffee that's boiled to within an inch of it's life... dR :(

    Oh mycuppa, really!!! Well I think that you would have to be the right person to get the best out of a peculator.  My OH has one at work and they hate it, they keep thinking about mods they can do to make it better, lucky for them we now have the new machine (still not here, hopefully tomorrow) and they'll get the old breville, it's got to be better than trying to mod the peculator :) Thanks bf, good I did put it in the right place :)

    The postman just delivered my Aeropress (cheers Tango) and a Coava disk so I will be giving it a trial after lunch :D Time to find out how bad the percolator really is...

    So far my trials with the Aeropress have me wondering why I used a perc for so long. My Breville perc is being retired and given to a workmate to take home if he wants it there - my guess is he will keep it at work for his dailly coffee needs. I've expiremented with a few ways of making my brew with the areo and so far all offer a better output than the perc I had come to know so well. I'm glad I started the thread or I would never have known... Thank you all :D
