After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Desiring of ones own coffee, an exercise in caffeinated narcissism.

So my wife and I went to well-known coffee house today as a treat between rehearsals and children.  The food was simply wonderful and not just because somebody else had made it.  The coffee however was average. Now when I say average I suppose I'm saying average in comparison to the coffee I roast and make here at home.  Compared to other cafes it is top shelf.  Has my addiction and obsession lead to a desire for my own coffee and my own way?  How is it that others can rave and yet I'm left feeling a little cold? These folk are best known for the coffee and have signs up requesting folk not BYO food; and yet, my temptation next time would be to BYO coffee! Should I seek help?

To add to my dilemma I bought home a bag of freshly roasted beans and they're almost as good as the ones I rose to myself!  Help me I've become on monster!

Im entirely of the same mind, Brett I find that I get a craving for my own coffee and roast profiles and often anything else just falls short of the mark I mean I can appreciate other peoples coffee and all that - but too often I find it pales in comparison to hat I can produce myself - so I often find myself asking, "Why bother?" Or, i have a coffee out, then another of my own when I get home - I consider this to be a win / win situation ... P
  • I think you've articulated my thoughts better than I did Pat!  Yes, it's desiring the taste you're accostomed too! I'll cancel my therapy session!  Cheers
  • Hi Brett, I have to agree with you wholeheartedly. There are many places that serve good food (cafe, restaurant, bakery, patisserie etc, etc) but serve poor to average coffee. Good coffee used to be readily available, however, I believe that the quality has dropped. I know a lot of people have improved palettes, but I still find that many places only serve average coffee. A good house blend that offers a nice combo of body, sweetness, complexity and aftertaste is hard to find. People want to sit down and have a nice coffee, but are being disappointed. I find many coffees to be lacking in an essential element and quite lacklustre. Part of the fault is the barista, but also with the ingredients as well. With the price of good coffee increasing, I believe (my theory) that many places are implementing cost cutting features. Maintaining consistency and quality is essential. Also, crappy milk destroys a good coffee, yet many places continue to use it. A2 is so popular now (we drink it as other milk can make my girls queasy), yet what establishment offers it as an extra (like soy for example). If full cream milk is the base drink, offer skim A2 for an extra 50c. (I use full cream for my coffees and find skim to be too watery). I have had a really good coffee from a local place, and then returned a few times. Each time the coffee has been mediocre. I bought roasted beans from them and found the same result at home. My family also echoes this sentiment. My home roasts are good, but I am very critical of them, as I have a very specific taste that I seek. I find it hard to find coffee to my taste, and like you, prefer my own. Hence my path to buying only high quality beans. From now on, my stash of coffee will only consist of very good Single Origins, that can also be blended to achieve what I want. As our coffee journey develops, we learn to appreciate what we like, and concentrate on that. I still cannot resist buying from a good roaster to compare......

I agree!  I am enjoying MyCuppas Columbian and Decaf currently and have a bag of Campos Kenyan also which I've not had great results with as yet.  Temperature surfing time!
