After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

I'm new here...

Hi, My name is Alf. I'm from Holland and have been making espresso's for over 20 years now. I've owned a pretty large number of machines but the last were a Quickmill Andreja, some Ponte Vecchio's,a Strega and now a Izzo Pompei which I consider to be the best I've ever owned. My current grinder is a new Mazzer Major. Greetz Alf
Welcome to the Crema forum Alf You will fit right in here, as we have all tread the same upgrade path you have Long live the lever and big grinders KK
  • Goedemorgen, Alf :) Dutchie here too, drinking coffee made every which way... regularly freaking the forum out by stating i often drink my espresso with... Carnation milk ( and some hot water). Can't get the koffie-met-koffiemelk gene out of  me :D :D ;) L

Great.Living in Australia. I've thought about  emigrating in my younger years.Fear of big White Pointers kept me away I guess. :D
  • Sorry we don't have a like button for your setup Alf... how about a LOVE button instead  :thumb:
  • Hi everyone have visited this forum many times and found it to be very friendly with lots of useful posts. Thought I'd better join up in case I ever had anything to contribute! Been into coffee for a number of years now, and with a "full-on" four year old and a 1 year old running around the house, now find it absolutely essential in getting through the day! Have only this year given home roasting a crack, and am really enjoying it. Dan

A warm welcome to the Crema forum Dan Coffee is the glue that binds us all KK
  • Hi Dan, You have some good equipment listed there! You'll find a few other Behmor users on here too, so check out the roasting section! Welcome.
  • A warm welcome Dan! Your kids are the same age as mine so I can thoroughly recommend sticking with the home roasting... as opposed to drinking the wine collection  ;)
  • Thanks guys. Yes, I really spoiled myself this year after my Sunbeam 6910 had served me pretty well, but had one too many collar replacements in my opinion. Anyways, it was time to go to the next level  :) And yes, I have been searching through all the posts reading up on tips for the Behmor ... still a lot to learn and improve on. Brett, my 4 year old is the one where I get the biggest benefit from caffeine (me, not him). The 1 year old is very interested in the coffee making process, he watches the beans getting ground each morning and mumbles a lot of things during it all, probably pointing out where I am going wrong  ^-^
  • My four year old has taken to complaining about the smell of coffee.  I've told her that the coffee is necessary!  She bought it but let me know she still didn't like it!
  • the 1yo is most likely mumbling something like; "dad stop grinding finer and finer, all you need to do is up- dose a little"  gurble gurble
  • Not new but been missing in action. :) No updates on the equipment front, except maybe for the Aeropress and the Hario Slim grinder, for work, meetings etc. Still roasting in the little Baby Roaster, using the Rancilio Rocky and the Silvia with the PID kit. Nothing flash but does me. Play around with blends and beans, you know the drill. May not be posting again for a bit, dunno, in the final stages of my PhD - finally.
  • PHD...  no wonder your brain hurts
  • Hi, I've been lurking here for ages. Thought it was about time to join up. I've been home roasting for about 2 or 3 years. Mainly for espresso. But I do enjoy the odd syphon or aeropress. At the moment I have an Oscar and a Eureka conical grinder. Cheers,
  • Hi Chaos, I just bought an Oscar :) How do you find it? Glad to see you joining up and I hope to see you in Chat and posting on the board. There are equipment threads, and roasting threads, and we would love to see you posting about your experiences and what roasting equipment you use. Michael
  • Thanks for the warm welcome. I really like the Oscar... except for the noise. But since buying it I've given up on milk drinks. And now it seems like a bit of a time+energy waste to heat a big boiler full of water up to steam temp every time I feel like espresso. So I'm thinking of replacing it with something more suitable. Maybe a single boiler E61 but not really sure.
  • The boiler isn't that big, and would help with temperature stability of the group and you never know when someone will turn up and want a latte. ;)

A caravel heats the water to espresso temperature as do all open kettle design espresso machines. Worth considering. My caravel heats about 400ml in the morning for  two double ristrettos. If, however, you are happy with the coffee from the Oscar, you night as well stick with it. Any machine takes time to heat up and cost difference is minimal for those extra ten to twenty degrees. Far less than changing machines.
  • Yeah Oscar will be hanging around for a little while yet. We're renting, building, and just about to move interstate. So spare cash is very scarce. But dreams are free  :)
  • Welcome to the Crema forum Chaos Did you by any chance watch Get Smart to have a forum name like that KK
  • Thanks for the welcome. Get Smart was ok but Inspector Gadget was more my style/era. Chaos is the name of my mancave/garage.

  • Hi everyone and thanks for the welcome admin. Well after reading through a lot of information on this forum, I'm now feeling way out of my comfort zone, we are far from connoisseurs of coffee (as guidelines below will tell) but know a good coffee when we come across one, which is rare as we don't go out for coffee as many do, so really only come across a good coffee at functions in places of good reputation. Hubby and I have just purchased our first machine and are awaiting delivery this is it........ http://www.coffeeitalia.com.au/proddetail.php?prod=gaggia_classic_grinder We are both in our 50s and almost empty nesters, so this was our treat for Xmas, after enjoying wonderful coffee for 6 days on a cruise, hubby decided that we needed to splurge and do away with the pods, we both almost spat out our first cuppa on arriving home and took us a long time to get used them again. Now, apart from learning how to use this little wonder, we are looking for information on coffee (brands etc) to use and best grind, I know any information shared will be subjective so as a bit of a guide line as to what sort of coffee we enjoy. When drinking instant we like Nescafe Expresso and Moccona. Our pod system is from Aldi, my hubby enjoy Reggio (9) and I enjoy Torino (11) and Abruzzo (12) I know, I know, don't choke on your coffees at the above likes! We also don't mind the McDonalds Cafe coffee (double shot) don't choke on that either. The only other beans that I KNOW I have had and like is Manfredi and Piazo D'Oro but do not know anything else other than the name. For anyone that may be in the Castle Hill area of NSW, I loved the coffee I had at Trellinis Bar and Resturant, so if you know the name of what they use and if I can purchase it I'd be most appreciative. We are on the NSW Central Coast which is where we would purchase our coffee but quite happy to purchase online if we found a bean we really like. As I said earlier, we a real newbies when it comes to REAL coffee and I TIA for any information that you may share. Cheers
