Johann Sebastian Bach wrote no operas, but this small mini comic opera is often performed staged and costumed, even if that was not the case.
It tells the story of a father and his daughter - one who is addicted to coffee.
There are essentially three roles, a tenor (the narrator) a bass (the father) and a soprano (the daughter). It's accompanied either by harpsichord or by a small chamber orchestra.
My favourite line from the narrator is translated as:
"But! That crafty little maiden!
Has quite made up her mind,
Before she gives consent to marry.
That her lover must make a solemn vow.
That she may have her coffee.
Wherever,
and whenever,
she pleases!"
Quite by chance I'll be performing the tenor role in this cantata in just under a month on Sunday April 21 at 2pm at the Butter Factory Arts centre in Coorooy.
I was asked to perform in a cantata without knowing anything about it and wasn't suggested due to my coffee connection. Nice bit of coincidence, I'll be glad if I don't stuff it up.
