Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

So poor old Gerry wants to revert to the good old days of customs tariffs and import duty, my heart bleeds for the poor bastard.
If HN and the other major retailers were not so bloody greedy and learned how to compete in an open market they would not be in the position they claim to be.
No sympathy from me, they are competing in a world market, if they cant cut the mustard then get out and leave it to someone who can.
I'm sick to death of retailers ripping off the Aussie public.
I buy most of my clothing from the US, as an example Wrangler jeans Aust $90 US $23, Rockport shoes Aust$230 US$ 75 what's more they offer a vastly superior range of sizes, and the service from US companies makes us Aussies look like incompetent mugs.
Place an order for jeans with Sheplers on line in Kansas and the package is delivered to your door within 5 days, other retailers for photographic or electronic gear are equally as good.
People are realising there is a much better way to shop.

    Agreed I resent paying essentially for the rent on an expense retail site each time I make a purchase and for dubious customer service - admittedly there are exceptions - especially with the Aussie dollar hitting parity I just picked up six limited print tee shirts from the states for $60 plus $6 postage delivered to my door within five days!  They'd pretty impressive customer service ! Also the last time I looked hardly normal was full of pod coffee machines on the basis that the consumer Market demanded this level of 'convenience' - nothing to do with the low production values and cheap wholesale purchase costs I'm sure... But, to their credit they do have just about everything under their roof and the discount bins - a recent innovation I'm sure - can hold some genuine bargains P

    surely it doesn' t work for coffee machines tho - what about the warranty; would you buy one over the internet if you didn't have some sort of warranty arrangement?

    grrrrrr Gerry Harvey makes me angry. While internet grey importing makes my day job difficult from time to time, Gerry harvey's attitude really shits me. His attitude to the internet is purely informed by the fact that he is nothing more than a selfish landlord who has multiple leases to protect. he is NOT an electronics retailer. he's a *cheesy* landlord concerned about foot traffic. MODS NOTE - I toned this one down a little bit - respect, the guy still pays our bills...

    I reckon your right as far as new machines go DR, however as ACG pointed out it s possible (if you have the skills) to buy and recondition/restore at a fraction of the price. Generally speaking though in my original post I was referring to clothing, electronics and such, just need to do your research. :)

    I'm looking at importing an old motor cycle from the US, they sell for a fraction of the price we pay over here. ;)

    You tell em Hazchem ;D I agree with you, I see he has a couple of pollies in his pocket, they're making noises about imposing an import GST to help the likes of Gerry and his retail mates, know where my vote will go at the next federal election and it ain't  gonna be for Labor. >:(

    Agree Hazchem - my only problem is I'm not very technical; if it wasn't for the warranty thing, I'd definitely purchase coffee equipment o/seas...
