After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Rancilio Lucy

edited January 1970 in Espresso Machines
Does anyone know much about the Rancilio Lucy machine ? I was just wondering whether the internals are the same as buying the Silvia and Rocky individually.

  • there are some minor differences, otherwise virtually the same. regardz, FC.
  • Are the differences worth worrying about. I'm debatting on whether its better to purchase the Lucy instead of the Silvia and Rocky individually. Whether there are any disadvantages in having a combined unit rather then seperate. Is it cheaper or not.
  • good question. Oddly, the price of lucy is more than the price of silvia & her brother rocky. I dont know why but I guess it has to do with the size of the production runs. I dont like the mess that always seems to occur when you have a machine/grinder combo in the one body - When one component needs to go in for service and you have a combo, you lose the use of the whole lot...which is not a problem if the machine needs service, but it is when the grinder needs service (as in if they were separate you could have continued to use the machine with preground while the grinder is away being fixed)- Apologies to everyone that owns one but I personaly think I have never seen anything so ugly as Lucy  ;D - and I wouldnt necessarily discount this as a reason to buy or not to buy a domestic machine, because its your kitchen and you have to live with it for a very long time!!!!! Thing is...right now you will be scratching to find a silvia anywhere to buy in oz, but you should be able to source a Lucy somewhere.......... Anyone else? Regardz, FC.
  • tanagnostakis, Depends what you're after. As FC said the cost of a Lucy is more than Silvia + Rocky which is why 99% of people go that way. That said, if cost isn't the only factor it may be a consideration. My old machine (Quaha Napoletana II) was an integrated grinder machine and compared to my current setup (Silvia + Compak K3 Elite doser) it was more compact, easier to transport, only required one power plug and looked neater. The aesthetics can be important when WAF needs to be considered (Wife Approval Factor)! The downsides are as FC mentioned. Personally I probably would have gone for a Lucy if the price had been competitive. As it was I was able to get my present setup for less than a Lucy, and the grinder is significantly better than the Rocky. Greg
