After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Advice on Roasters

Hi guys and girls

I would like to purchase an in house roaster in the New Year and would greatly appreciate any information in relation to which roasters are superior to others in terms of quality build and end product (of the beans).

I do have an idea of how much it is going to cost me and I really want to make the write choice before I take the plunge.

I understand that the roasting circle is a small one and were nobody wants more competitors but I assure you that I will not be moving in on any other roasters territory (the suburb I am in has no such coffee house).

I also understand that training is not provided in Australia and it is virtually impossible to get a job in this profession and I am even contemplating going to the states for some training.

It is something that I am very determined to learn and hopefully master. Coffee and food are my biggest passions and once again any information would be greatly appreciate.

  • What size roaster are you interested in? How much do you intend to roast in what timeframe? Need more details. As for training, you are right - not many roasters are willing to give away what has taken them years to figure out. Depending on your roaster budget you can get basic training from the manufacturer. It takes 15 mins to learn to roast but a lifetime to perfect. Do lots of research yourself and get some time on a roaster. Maybe somebody would teach you if you asked around?   • Hi nzroaster I want to be safe in the size roaster I buy as well and I think there is a big gap between 12kg and 24kg roasters? My plan at the moment is to just produce fresh, high quality coffee in house. But I am also not ruling out roasting for others down the track. I would like to be aiming at around 50-60kg/ week in beverages but also have the capacity to roast 100kg a week comfortably. I don
  • holy crap thats a huge roaster !! i have a little home one that does 150g at a time and that cost me $100. you must be lookin at huge $$$.
  • George, Furthur what I replied in email (should have read the post first). If you plan on roasting and running your shop you need to decide how many days/hours per day you want to roast. On a 6 kilo roaster you can have around 5 Kilo roasted in 15 mins, being new to roasting you probably wont be continuous roasting so plan on 3 roasts/hour. So 100Kg would be around 1 full days roasting each week or 3 hours for 3 days.
