Breville 800es Steam

Hello all. I've just purchased my first espresso machine and am having trouble with steaming/frothing the milk. After I've brewed the espresso shot and commence the steaming of milk the breville 800es seems to run out of puff half through steaming.
Is this common to all machines? Am I doing somthing wrong? :o

  • my brother has the same machine and has similar issues so no it's probably not you !! lol its the very same issues i had with my older pump pavoni machine. it also depends on how much milk your trying to heat up of course. basically it comes down to the size of the water resovoir, (boiler), used for steaming. it contains a smaller amount of water than some of the bigger machines. when the boiler runs out of water you need to wait for the water to refill/ heat up water to temp. you just need to wait two cycles to heat up the milk.
  • My old Saeco Via Venezia had, I think, a 180 ml boiler. This explains the waiting between extraction and steaming, and the inconsistant steaming pressure throughout the long steaming process.
  • G'day Espressoninja, just a quick point about your new pride and joy, it has a thermoblock, not a boiler. In theory your steam should be getting drier/hotter the longer you steam, due to the way the thermoblock operates. How much milk are you trying to steam in one hit?  If you're trying to steam enough milk for 4 or more cups, you will struggle with it. Without stating the obvious, have you checked the resovoir level?  If this gets too low, you may have trouble with the pump drawing water into the thermoblock to heat it up. If the water level is fine, maybe the pump isn't operating at its full capacity and should be checked by a service tech. Hope this helps, Steve.
  • Just to let you all know I've now got steam. I have found if I let the machine heat up for 5 - 10 minutes before hand (even though the indicator lights display that the machine is ready for use after a couple of minutes)I have steam enough not only for 1/3 of a jug but for a whole jug of milk. Thanks for your help everyone who replied. ;D ps. this is a fantastic machine for the money $369
