After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

anyone on this forum have one ?
anyone know if they sell them in Oz, if not where do i order ?
how do i know it will fit my giotto ?

  • Remus I imported one from Espresso Parts site, but despite advice it would fit my Giotto it did not - so I sent it back. They toook it back no problems so that was OK.  Meantime, I am keen to find one locally too.
  • Remus, I've got one for my Diadema lever machine. I chopped one of the two portafilters I got with the machine with a holesaw. It took about 5 minutes and $20 to do. If you've got an electric drill, I'd be happy to send you the holesaw (presuming it's not a prohibited object). Better yet would be if you are planning to attend next weeks CoffeeGeek gathering at Coffee Masters at Erskineville. Regards, Gary
  • As soon as get my machine on "15th", I'm Going to get the single one milled out( my mates in the engineering Dep @ work) If it works out ok (I'm sure it will), I'll post a pic,  (If I can work out how to post pic's),and its only going to cost me a Six pack, I'm sure if you want to use one of yours, I could get him to do the same, pretty easy, We make tooling out of solid s/s and brass all the time, mate thinks it should only take 10-15 mins.

    I think it's around 55-56mm but I'll verify that tonight. There was a suggestion that the next-larger size (imperial 2 1/2") could accommodate the famous triple basket, but I recall opting for something a touch narrower to ensure my handle connection remained strong. Regards, Gary
  • Gary, Looks great. I'm guessing you started with the P/F face down. How hard was it to start? (The drill didn't kick at all). This triple coffee basket where do you get it from? (hents my Thread on e61 parts) Cheers Mark
  • G'day Mark, I held it by hand in the grass - no vice, no drill-press etc. I ran the drill at a low speed and drilled down into it with the pf facing its normal way (I had firstly removed the spout). Drilling down into the pf meant there was little room for the saw to wander. The grass held it very snugly and I drilled slowly until the saw had started cutting through the chrome. There was no kicking and no deviation. I haven't purchased a triple basket. I'm using the LM-style ridged doubles which hold around 18 grams very comfortably, but can go to around 21+ with some effort. I seem to get best results at around 17 grams. Regards, Gary

    OK, just checked the hole saw and measured the portafilter, too. The hole is 54mm (close enough to 2 1/8"). The hole saw set is a Stanley 5 piece - 4 saws and an arbor. Cost was around $20. Regards, Gary

  • i've noticed a few fine granules leaking into the coffee using the naked pf. it is only happening with a coupld of belneds which require a finer grind that i normally use. checked the head and is spotless, have cleaned the pf completely and am not getting this issue with a normal spout pf. anyone else come across this problem ?
  • hmm ... maybe grinding too fine? In my experience, there'll always be a few grinds in the bottom of the cup - though too many hints at a problem. I noticed yesterday on a naked pf, that after tamping and inserting the pf into the group head, that there were a few stray specks of grind. My guess was that either: a) there may have been a few stray grinds on the table where I was tamping, or b) the force of tamping (I'm probably too heavy handed when tamping) pushes a few smaller grinds through the holes on the bottom of the basket. Maybe ... next time you knock out a puck, inspect the bottom and see if you can see little tiny stalactities on the bottom of the puck ... that may prove theory (b).

  • On tamping, I realised (with a set of bathroom scales) I was tamping to about 30-40 kg of 'pressure' (ok, it's not pressure, but you know what I mean). I think this caused some inconsistency with my shots. On the naked pf, a friend tried to drill the bottom out of one of my pfs on the weekend and his drill bit (54 ml circular saw bit) just wouldn't cut it (pun intended). He is going to get a mate of his who has better tools to give it a go - hopefuly I get it back next weekend. P
  • Gents please permit me.... What you are describing is simply impossible. You cannot get any granules of coffee through the holes in the filter / period. The holes in the filters are simply too small. Whether the group handle has had a big hole cut into it or is as standard, no matter...granules cant get through the filter. Any granules that end up in the cup have come over the top of the filter...ie the area between the top of the filter, and the rubber seal. So perfhaps the filter has been overfilled, the shower pushes into the puk when the group handle is done up..it forces the grains of coffee up the side around the shower, and possibly results in an incomplete seal at the top of the filter causing a bad seal... And of course as someone else said, there may have been a few grains of coffee on the bench while you were tamping, and they end up up the spouts to get washed out during brewing. Real "fines" are a different story but again they have to be pretty fine to get through the holes in the filters. Take a look...these are extremely fine. This is certainly a function of the consistency of grind but cant practically be eliminated as you cant help but have *some* coffee turning to powder during the process...and yes then, it will most probably be affected by the type of coffee being ground (ie density of individual origin). I was going to say that the evidence in my knock-box seem to suggest otherwise, regarding the 'grains getting forced through the basket holes' ... could it be that during brewing, most of the fines are forced through the puck and through the holes of the basket, creating the stalactites on the bottom of the puck AND showing up as grinds in the bottom of the cup??? It's just that the grinds in the bottom of the cup do seem bigger than fines/coffee dust... What about coffee grinds being further broken apart (and subsequently forced through holes) as they're pushed against the holes during the pressures of heavy-handed tamping and brewing? Can't be that impossible?
  • Back on the subject - I received my chopped pf today (54ml) and am keen to fire it up tonight. I will let you all know tomorrow. HOwever, I am a little concerned as I haven't been getting good extractions from teh current blend I am using - it either gushes out or burns, despite adjusting my dose/tamp/grind. I will hopefully get other beans tomorrow that I am more used to. (Unfortunately, I haven't had the time of late for home roasting). Cheerio P
  • So, naked pf's are very messy!  :o At least now I know what channeling really is - almost getting shots of coffee in the eye. Today, I am hoping to get some more beans of a blend I know I can pull good shots frequently (FC, I didn't want to use the 'consistency' word) and will see how I go there. Cheerio P
  • Hey patrick, I've only used a naked a couple of times, but I've noticed that when I used one on saturday I didn't get any channelling. I've been working heaps on my distribution technique, and I think this has been the answer. If you go to coffeegeek.com, search the forums for 'stockfleths move', which is a distribution technique that a lot of the nordic barista's use - the guys from the stockfleths cafes - the ones that tend to win all the world championships... It's helped a lot! Once you've downloaded the short video, it's helpful to read the discussion thread to understand exactly what they're doing ... and when you can do it, you feel like a real rock-star barista!
