After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

ECM Giotto Premium: What is this wire for?

edited January 1970 in Espresso Machines
I received my brand new ECM Giotto Premium yesterday and had to take the top cover off to fix some things that got loose during shipping.

I found a set of three wires (white/yellow/green).  The white wire is connected to the water intake (area where water from the tank flows into tubes that take the water to the boiler).  The yellow/green wires had a single connector but where not connected to anything.  I could not find an associated connector.

Does anyone have ideas where this should be connected?

The yellow/green wire I am refering to is identified by the red arrow in the photo below.

  • Best bet will be to call ECM - their toll free number is on this page, and I have always found them great to deal with. www.ecm-espresso.com.au/ Having said that, from memory on my Giotto there is a wire with a sort of crimped connector on the end that connects to a metal flange located up near the top of the water resivoir - it's an earthing connection so that it will trip a household fuse should mains come in contact with the metal casing for some reason. It's reasonably easy to knock off when "mucking around" - long way of saying, it's not that is it? (But I'm no sparky, so check with the folks at the site above)
  • Thanks for the response.  I live in the U.S. so I'll see if I can locate a US-based ECM representative. I looked at the ground wire and it is a bit too short to reach the top of the reseviour.  I'll see if I can find another attachment point on the metal cover.   Are the internals between the Giotto Premium which I have and the standard Giotto much different from a wiring standpoint?
  • Problem solved.  I referred Peter from ECM Australia to this thread and he has been in contact with an explanation and solution. Another Angel on the Internet gets its wings.
  • A million thanks to Peter and Jeremy for getting me on my way! I scoured the internet for answers to no avail until Peter sent me an email with the exact information I needed.
  • Hello Knifegun, As I have the Giotto Premium, and I noticed the same wire lying on the bottom om my machine.... Well, what was the response from ECM??? I traced mine back to where it was earthed to an earthing bolt, so I fitted the loose end to another earth crimp elsewhere to stop it vibrating.  But if it *should* be attached to something else well I'll change it back - once I find out where it goes! Thanks mate, Ken
  • Essentially Peter stated that the yellow/green wire is a bypass wire used for diagnostic purposes only (to bypass the water level earthing circuit).  The wire should remain unconnected. Does that help?
  • Yep, certainly helped to ease my overprotective concern for my little baby... To be honest, the rattle that the Giotto initially made was quite disconcerting, but having a *slight* dig around inside to better support some of the cables did help.  It was then that I noticed the loose connector - so I found a spare earth spade on a splitter connector and terminated it there.   Still, just wanted to check. Thanks for getting back to me so soon. Ken
