My new toy

Well I picked my new lathe today. Generally, its pretty good and what I expected.

Things I like

- the motor can swivel  so the job is out the front
- came with 100 mm scroll chuck & live centre.
- variable speed using a variable sized pulley system
- Its heavy as. The lathe itself weighs 80 kg
- came with a full kit of decent looking tools
- I also got a arbor and 16 mm drill chuck for tail stock

Things I dont like

- the stand is total shite. I fully expected it as its just thing bits of angle. Think mecharno. I'm going to mount it on a bench tomorrow.
- One bolt for the tool rest is missing completely
- Not sure how accurate the tail stock is for centre drilling.
- the supplied scroll chuck is not the best and will be upgraded ASAP to a conventional 3 or 4 jaw.
- The tool rest is way to big. The minimum size of timber / resin would be 300 mm if using the live centre. Luckily I have a small tool rest of the freebie I was given on the weekend. A few mods and it will be fine.

Just need some lessons. Coffee AM ? :D

Ive done enough on metal lathes to get by but word lathes is all knew and touchy feely

Your bits are done Brett, for better or worse :D . If you could measure the diameter of the hole for me ( with verniers) that would be great.

31.5 inside the tap/hole. 31.64 tapering to 31.24 at 8mm depth.  :head:

you should be able to make lots of big bits of wood smaller with that one . but i have never been a fan of the swivel head lathes , i have 2 lathes and my next one will be a w387 style lathe ( sliding head stock  ) i know a few guys that have them and swear by them . ( much heavier stand on them too ) like the hare and forbes WL46a. johno

I'm lovin' it texx. I dont know enough ( or anything) to really compare it to any others. I'm just feeling my way at the moment. Luckily, resin is soft so know major fuck ups, yet. A few moments but all recoverable.  :thumb:
