I was a little dubious about getting free coffee - but the samples arrived yesterday & they are great.

Come on Tanya, I don't want to believe that you are a shameless self-serving PR invention.  Give us some more info: 1. Extraction method 2. Techniques used 3. Results 4. Cupping notes notes notes A one line wonder of a post from a recent member will not garner support for your favorite business, in fact it may damage their credibility.  If this was your evil plan all along however, then Kudos Tanya!  :thumb:

Come on guys. Don't hound the poor girl. She posted a similar post under a different username on CS  (What's in my grinder and cup) about the cafe. Looking at some of her previous posts there, I don't see her as some kind of evil spammer or "shameless self-serving PR invention". Can I suggest that users be given some benefit of any doubt? You don't want to destroy the perception of Crema being a friendly forum do you?

Wow. I am new to this forum & I had no idea that my sharing something that I thought was a good deal with others would cause all of this furore. Thank you Hip & Kelsey for seeing my post for what it was - I thought forums were about sharing & getting help & tips. I thought I had a good tip. As for defending my purchase I am but a coffee novice, a home enthusiast - I have been enjoying my sample in the form of short mac's made on my Gaggia Classic & grinded with a Sunbeam home grinder.

Yes, well welcome anyway Tanya.  :thumb: By all means, enjoying your coffee is what it is all about. I checked the website and it looks like their producst deserve a try. To be fair to mycuppa and others your post did look similar to that of other forum posters we see who disguise promoting their own products as an innocent post. That's why I checked your CoffeeSnobs posts.

Tanya, to be equally fair to the others, we have a recurring problem with spammers and SEO opportunists. It's not always easy to tell the difference. Can you tell us a little more about the flavour profile of the Tokyo?

Yay! Hi Tanya and thank you for not being a spammer or PR invention.  It is refreshing!!! Short Macs puts you out of my league, I am a double piccolo drinker.  Coffee Secrets prices are 'up there' but it's nice to see another Brisbane Roastery/Cafe cropping up.  They'll be on my list if I'm ever down that way!

Well just for Kelsey I will show myself for the novice I am. I have had a read here & on the CS forum about cupping & tasting notes - but most of it is just mind boggling to me. I don't have the refined palate yet to pick up honey & floral, sour, salty etc etc. The description waxes lyrical about berry tones, I can maybe taste berries but I think I can taste them because I think I am supposed to!! But what I can taste is coffee - rich, smooth, complex coffee. What I can tell you about this coffee in my layman way is that it is one of the few coffee's that I have been able to find that has the richness & intensity of flavour that I like, without any ashy bitterness. Quite a few other blends that I like the flavour & strength of I have to add sugar to to minimise the bite. This coffee is perfect without any sugar. I know don't bash me - sugar is a coffee sin - I have committed crimes against coffee, I know! So my un-expert opinion would be that it has great aroma, produces good crema & is rich & flavoursome while still being smooth. It has done the rounds here & all have liked it, even the half shot people liked it, so I have used up all of my sample & have a kg making its way to me.

Tanya, I haven't tasted the coffee that you are referring to, but first, I personally think you need to distinguish between the sour (acidic) and bitter. Generally if the coffee pushes too far either way, you'll need sugar. Generally, in milk, the sourness fades out a bit, but bitterness will still come through, so your tongue/palate already knows the difference...you just need your brain to actively distinguish between the two. Once you've got that sorted, you can then start trying to pick out berries, spices etc. It takes time. Took me about 6 months just to be able to have tasted enough to make even those distinctions, but some people are very gifted immediately and can pick these things out.

You are more likely to get those flavours in an espresso shot (ie no milk) or a manual brewing method. Also coffee that is roasted darker for espresso making will not display the berry tones as much as lighter roasts. I also agree with Richard that it can take time and experience to learn to pick out various flavours. If you are keen on exploring what coffee tasting is about then also read the threads on manual brewing methods on this forum and CoffeeSnobs. The first investment in improving the taste of your coffee is usually upgrading to a better grinder.

Ok guys - have to admit I was a little unsure about this one, and decided to give Tanya [as a relative newbie] the 'benefit of the doubt'... however on reflection I probably should have been more hard-nosed; Tanya, while I realise that this may have been an innocent action, you have to realise that there are plenty of unscrupulous people who will happily promote their [or their associates'] products on forums such as this. In fairness to our existing sponsors, who have an equal or superior product to anything on the market, I have taken the name of the company out of Tanya's original post...
