GeekKopi Fresh Coffee wrote: Ah yes, theres the rub... Not willing to spend much on a (for most of the time) unnecessary (for me) lens ( I dont do portaits). So it would at best get used once every two years for a few days, at this exhibition. So around $150.00 for the basic nifty fifty is all it needs thrown at it at this time. Put it on full frame (5D Mk2) and as you say there may be some instances where it will be a bit tight. Put it on APS-C (1100D) and it does get tight, so would go for some other wider prime. But that starts to increase the budget for something I wont use much...). Leaving me with the 50mm on full frame as a nice compromise OR, forget it entirely and take the 24 to 70 zoom and not worry about the weight factor.... 🙂 Actually that will work. Use the 50mm on full frame at exhibition, and take the 24-105 F4 as my usual travel lens for sight seeing outside of exhibition. Leave 24-70 at home this time.... decisions, decisions.... No? Get the 50mm 1.8g. Recent reviews shows that it outperforms the 1.8d in terms of the creaminess of the bokeh and sharpness. It also has aspherical lens elements which the 1.8d doesn't. THe 1.8g is also an afs lens which means that it works on cheaper Nikon bodies that don't have the body motor to drive auto-focus. You can also use it on a crop sensor and you have a very nice portrait lens of 75mm equivalent field of view. Take that with you at the expo and test it out. If you find after day one it's not wide enough take your zoom the next day or get creative with your feet while using the 50mm. If the 50mm doesn't work for you its only $250 and I'm sure you can sell it on eBay for over $200 with the invoice and warranty (just don't register the lens with mynikonlife.com.au if you plan to sell it - leave that to the new owner) Just a few thoughts.
GeekKopi and..... i just re-read that FC is using a Canon... lol,, not a Nikon... just goes to show that my speed reading needs improvement... 🙂 my advice still applies, use a 50mm 🙂
FreshCoffee2 Hey GK, all good and yes I have decided tio buy the 50 mm! Thanks for your thoughts 😉

Brett_H Fresh Coffee wrote: Hey GK, all good and yes I have decided tio buy the 50 mm! Thanks for your thoughts 😉 I have used the 50mm 1.2 and it's wonderful but heavier. I'd be going for the 1.4! The Nikon don't have a 1.2 in the nifty fifties and opt for a 58mm1.4 as their premium offering. It's quite frankly a useless lens so I settled on the 1.4g. I took mine to Sydney with the kids recently and it was perfect for most situations. I'm checking out the 28mm 1.8 but I fear it will be a bit wide for my liking.
GeekKopi Anyone going to The Digital Show at the Melb Expo Centre this weekend? if so you can grab yourself a free ticket valid all 3 days by using the coupon code "TDS2015RETAILER" (without "") when you pre-order a ticket on their website. http://www.thedigitalshow.com.au/pre-registration/
FreshCoffee2 ...and, because we often dont hear the outcome of many of these discussions, letting you know I just bought (cover your eyes nikon people ;D) a canon ef 50mm f1.4 lens. I'm sure it will do nicely... Thanks for your ideas guys.

GeekKopi Speaking of expos I have decided to take the 11-20 for TDS2015 at the Melbourne expo centre tomorrow. I'll be shooting mainly at 20mm (equivalent field of view of a 30mm FF) and every so often I might do a few shots at 11mm (16.5mm equivalent).
Brett_H Nice! I've often wondered if I should get a 35mm or 28mm prime. Look forward to seeing your shots!
GeekKopi Brett H wrote: Nice! I've often wondered if I should get a 35mm or 28mm prime. Look forward to seeing your shots! i popped in for a little bit as I spent more time at the baby expo next door with the Mrs and baby. Well to sum it up its like any other expo. The multinationals taking up most of the space and the smaller retailers in a 2x3m booth. There were some demos on lighting and other photo tips and post editing. Nothing new but good for people starting out to take pictures. I was hoping to grab some Joby products but they didn't sell any on site. I took a few pics but spent most of my time waiting in line to ask a Nikon guy at the Nikon stand how much for a refurb d810. Well $300 less than the price in a shop. The lady in front of my bought a refurb d800 for $2K and another guy bought a refurb d750 for $1800. All in all it was average but I did get a free coffee from the Nikon baristas. Taste was average and sugar was needed. Pics to follow.
GeekKopi ok, here are a few shots. indoor lighting was mixed, some parts well lit, some parts shockingly dark. I was shooting in manual mode making adjustments to ISO, Shutter and Aperture. I thought to myself it's a good time to take full control of this camera body in a challenging environment. I did "chimp" for a while I was dialling in my settings. I took heaps of "street" type photos of people and even though I wasn't pointing a massively long telephoto lens at them they gave me dirty looks.... I do apologise that I wasn't just taking photos of cameras on display (even though I did take a few) and that I was more in their face with an ultra-wide angle rather than like a weird perv shooting from a distance with a long zoom and hood (indoors). lol FYI - The fastest aperture of the lens is f2.8. Oh, and I didn't see Canon there...
Brett_H Nice! A D800 for $2k is a good price. The 750 for 100 less than new is not. Save your pennies on a new body... The one you have is more than capable. The next generation of releases will be worth waiting for!

Off to bed. 5am start tomorrow on site.
GeekKopi Sunrise photo shoot @ Altona boat ramp pier. I set up at 5:30am an awaited the sky to light up. Well there was heaps of could cover so no real sunrise but the picture still turned out very nice. Milky smooth water and moving cloud trails. I will need to go back when the weather forecast is better. Photo EXIF data: ISO100, f11, 11mm, 343sec. Shot with a Nikon D7200 and Tokina 11-20mm lens. Picture was taken in 14bit RAW.
Brett_H Nice work. Was the HDR done in-camera or post? Beautiful composition and even better for the iPhone picture. Bravo!!
GeekKopi Brett H wrote: Nice work. Was the HDR done in-camera or post? Beautiful composition and even better for the iPhone picture. Bravo!! no HDR. Single exposure. Just edited the blacks highlights and contrast. Also adjusted the white balance to correct for the slight colour tint of the ND filter. The exposure was a little off too so adjusted that a bit. These 10stop ND filters are darker than 10stops. I should have exposed longer but post can fix that. Didn't need to use a black card or GND to avoid blowing up the sky as it was cloudy and matrix metering was sufficient. Shot 14bit raw flat picture control.
