After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Londinium L1-p (plumbed)

edited January 1970 in Espresso Machines
Ive been following this company for a while, doing heaps of reading and have been quite entertained by all the heat of yesteryear surround the L1.

The company, from what I can see on their website, now has the L1-P for sale at $5K AUD + $400 shipping.

Its a plumbed unit, with a 7L boiler.
It looks refined and I like the clean lines.

Has anyone seen it? or considering getting it?

  • It is a gorgeous looking machine. It is a lot of of bikkies though :(.
  • For that kind of money I want a PID like the Izzo Gruppo.  Also, a 7l boiler isn't domestic territory so running costs will be up.  I've seen one of the early ones in the flesh.  Pretty rough really.  I'm sure they've much improved their manufacturing and QC but the price has gone up accordingly.  I reckon if you emailed some Aussie sellers that you have $5400 + import/customs tax to spend on a lever they'd come back with some pretty interesting options.  I'm not anti these these guys or importing, I just reckon there's much better out there for less dollars and less risk. Do your homework!

I love my Bezzera Strega ( It's the first unit sent to Australia for evaluation ) Brett has actually used it when it was a display model at Barazi If he remembers 4 years back ? He pulled a tiger stripe shot like no other  :thumb: KK
  • it looks more refined from their first model, but you're right Brett, the 7L boiler is probably overkill for home and at that price there are other options. Nonetheless, its a great looking unit and it will be interesting to read reviews of it in action.

Brett, I am not sure if a PID on a lever will deliver the same effect that one does on an E61 grouphead. If you are always playing with temps, and various roast levels, the machine you own is perfect. Commercial levers deliver stability and repeatability. They also prefer coffee that has been roasted for espresso. As to this machine, beauty (as always) is in the eye of the beholder. I prefer the style of the old levers from the 1950's, and do not really like the square box shape of modern machines. I do realize that the box shape is to keep manufacturing costs down. The lever is not a new machine, they have been in production for decades, and a few companies in Italy make fantastic machines. Buying this machine, means you forfeit our generous consumer laws. The L1 represented savings (and targeted a different niche market), hence its early popularity, and why people "imported" it. This machine is in a different league with very stiff competition. As Brett said, if you want a lever, and have the dollars, then contact the Aussie importers of Izzo, Bosco, Victoria Arduino etc. I am sure they will offer competitive pricing, and most importantly, product backup and local warranty. Also, if you are going to drop that sort of coin on a machine, then you would definitely want to touch and play with it in person, before committing to buy it. Each machine is different, and some quirks may irritate you down the track. A steam wand on the RHS is something that I despise, for instance.

If I could spare the $$$ and I had the space, I'd be all over this: http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/maryville/miscellaneous-goods/victoria-arduino-athena-3-group-lever-coffee-machine/1077386105 It's "local" to boot!
that is one beautiful machine Kevo. I've seen it on gumtree too.

    Well said.
  • Great post Lwowiak!  Yes, I have the perfect machine for me... It only took the fourth attempt but oh the fun I had trying!!!!
  • You can plumb a standard L1, so really I don't see why many people will bother with this oversized one. I've seen Kelsey's L1 and the build quality was much better than my Quick Mill 0996 Mod and the coffee was fantastic.  I do miss my Quick Mill for the lovely shots, but it was like having a tractor in the kitchen. lol. L1 do support really well, but there is a bit of hassle importing.  I do  love a lever though, it's just simple.
