Where do you get your greens from

Dry_bean

Thanks for the heads up Bliss, have placed a trial order of 7 kg, will be interested to see how the process goes, not sure how they ship, guess I'll find out in due course. 🙂 [/quote] Order arrived safe and sound from Bean Green this AM, well packed in sturdy paper bags with wire closure, certainly are a good company to deal with, and as I mentioned before, delivered to my door "by Australia Post" freight free. Will roast some this PM and report back. ;D

Hi Dry bean, Was it express or regular post? Not to be nosey, but what where your options with paying? CC or Paypal etc? The only thing that concerned me with their site was the lack of an business address or contact details apart from email. Emails not always the best form of communication when problems arise. They have an excellent range and the free post is a big bonus for me. Usually I have to pay about $15 for a 5kg express postbag for 5kg of beans which really bumps up the price.

Morning Lacehim, shipped regular mail, works fine for me as I always keep a stock of about 30 kg on hand so am in no rush. I paid by bank transfer, couldn't be easier. I agree, a contact phone number would be nice. Free shipping on orders over $25 is certainly a bonus. No complaints so far. ;D

That's good to know. I might just place and order for a few different beans that I don't normally see or missed out on. Out of interest, what did you buy?

Brazil Moreninha Formosa 3.000 Kg Kenyan AB Karen 2.000Kg Nicaragua Maragogype Superior ?2.000Kg

Dry_bean

Roasted 625 grams of the Nicaragua Maragogype Superior from Bean Green this morning, they roasted very evenly, took them pretty dark as is my preference, all looks good to me. I had forgotten just how large these Maragogype beans are, enormous. ;D

I have recently tried www.greenbeancoffee.com.au as I had run out of bean that someone wanted. Price? $15 per kilo plus delivery. The same bean from HAB - $6 per kilo (last year). Ordered on the 9/04 arrived 18/04. Well packaged, nice bag but just slightly under weight (well within the scales margin of error - so no concern) Thanks BIliss, I also hadn't seen Bean Green before. Looks good. Prices are good too. I have bought the Costa Rica Finca De Licho from MTC Group and it was $11.50/Kg plus delivery. Drinking a nice syphon of it as we speak! So $16/Kg is great price - at 2Kg free delivery and their margin prior is only $9 :o Not to mention they have to get it delivered to themselves, store it, package it and run the risk of no one buying it. Will have to give them a go one day......soon

Stupid scales 😡. My bad for posting that. Weighed the 5kg bag - 4995g (including the cotton bag). Weigh up 2500g for roasting. Weigh what is remaining (no cotton bag) - 2530g. The scales clearly are not linear but still 1% out over 5Kg is 50g.

Yep Beangreen all the way. I have used them for my last 3 orders and have been extremely pleased with their service and products. They have great new arrivals added all the time too and a great freight charge. great forum here too guys cheers

PS. Let us know what they roast like :-)

I have roasted the same bean before. The green bean looks like the same quality as from the other supplier. It is a Sumatra Gayo bean. Fairtrade so the quality isn't the best. Instead of roasting to find the sweet spot or roasting to get what you want out of the bean it is more of roasting to make it drinkable. But what the customer wants the costumer gets, I just try to make it the best I can. With this bean my drop temp is a lot lower and the time first crack is longer (14-15mins instead of 9-11). The ramp to first crack is far more linear. Normal time between FC an SC. With a more "normal" roast profile the bean was tasting too dirty and straw like in an unpleasant way.

Interesting BL, are you saying Fairtrade means something less than top quality? ???

Barrymik

I have used some gayo organic from beangreen and got a got result. Not a good as some blue batak i bought from BG and is now up in my favorites. Don't know if it is the same stuff as you bought from greenbean coffee though? Would love to hear your thoughts on the Fair Trade thing.

Koffee_Kosmo

A lot of Sumatrans have a funky flavour This flavour is mainly in the crema I normally stir the crema in for a more pleasant cup KK

I have found that there is a perception in the public that fairtrade relates to (top) quality. In my small experience it doesn't. It ain't the worst but it ain't the best. I have only roasted up 7 variants of fairtrade. This Sumatra to me is a average bean. You need to work at making it good. The only excellent one I have roasted was the Rwanda from Andy. Two others I have have been down right awful. I use one in a blend were by some magic it works really well, one of those 2 + 2 -1 = 5. Two others ok, good but certainly not great.

Was it called Blood, Sweat and Luxuries?

Those of you who know me from CS know I have a staple supply of PNG Kimel. I got my two bags so far from CoffeeCom after being introduced to them by Hazel. They don't normally sell to the public. I appreciate that they are willing to sell me a bag every couple of years. The rest of my supply has been bought from CS and I have a few bags that I bought from a CS member when he was leaving to live overseas. Some of his bags were obtained from other than CS. I have bought from MG in the past as well. I'm still trying to cut down my stash to a few favoured beans. Stash is only about 80kg now; about 50kg of that is the Kimel.

That's crazy. I think I have about 30kg that I've built up, but not one bean I have more than 5kg of. I need to get me some more Limu though. Question for those who buy from other places than CS, is the Gunna Limu Etho the same flavour profile as all the other Ethiopian Limu beans? That is by far my favourite bean.

So with all the dust still going on about Fair Trade and other so called Farmer assist packages... What is important to you when it comes to getting ya greens ? For me, when thinking of my coffee addiction it is; I want them now and I want X and I want it with min mucking about. I should just drop around and pick up, but I still get it delivered from http://www.beangreen.com.au/ Anger on being a Lazy Slob.

Frankly I don't care about fair trade etc, but that's a discussion for another day. I care about consistency for one, but I think I'll honestly start getting them locally (<1km from my work) now. Ethiopian Limu for $10 a kg...and I know it's good quality as I've had it roasted from them (for reference, it is Chipironi Mountain Coffee). They roast for a lot of local businesses, so I can't really go wrong. I don't want to buy from somewhere with a risk of getting a poor product, ever, so unless someone else has tried them out and gone to the trouble of letting me know (through here or otherwise) that it's decent I won't bother (ie I'd be happy to buy from KK or mycuppa, WOTB etc as I know they wouldn't risk their reputation).

Vinitasse

Has anyone here ever bought greens from diBella? Apparently they offer a $7/kg discount to members of that other forum. What sort of price does that knock the per kg price down to (couldn't find greens on their web pages) and would it be worth pursuing a similar arrangement for Crema forum members as well?

WotB

I gotta get me some cloth bags with zippers. WITHOUT a big stinking tiger picture on the front. Keeps scaring people away. It's hard getting the sort of quantities I want. Too big for smaller players, too small for bigger players. I also want to turn it over in a decent time. Some I may cellar for evaluating at a later date (years down the track). I wish half bags were the norm. At $7/kg discount, they're not making a whole lot off it.
