Do I gather from your chat snippets that you are doing the Who odyssey?

I watched evey Eccleston and Tennant episode (and most of all the originals for that matter) just can't get comfortable with the new Doctor.  My wife on the other hand still loves it... But not as much.

I suspect I may just like Matt Smith a little more. While I enjoyed Eccleston and loved Tennant, I feel that Smith brings an intensity and gravitas to the role that hasn't been seen since the early series. In fact, I think my favourite episode of all time is 'Vincent and the Doctor'. Moving stuff. And of course Amy. Rowr.

As an actor David Tennant's core/centre is unmatched.  It is no surprise that he is equally at home on the west end stage.  Too often his colleagues were dramatically one trick ponies which I feel only added to his command of th role.  The scope of his portrayal is yet I feel to be matched by the newbie.  I'll admit I've only watched a half-dozen episodes but I still can't stop drawing the comparison and I keep feeling like Smih comes up short.  FWIW I lied Baker over Pertwee and Davidson so what do I know!!

Brett, which Baker? My preference was for Tom. For me Tom Baker will always be the first image that comes to my mind when I think of the Doctor. But Matt Smith comes a close second!

Definitely Tom!  I will SE my Christmas break to attempt to watch the Smith series but at the first sign of trouble or character insincerity, affectation or lifting I'll scream and you'll all hear it!

Affectation is pretty much core to the Doctor's character, don't you think? I mean, celery pinned to the lapel? Each doctor has his quirks and Matt Smith has some pretty big ones. I think it's definitely worth it to watch the whole of Matt Smith's run in one hit. His performance is passionate and soulful and the writing in this series is, I think, superior to much of that since the start of this current era. There are definitely hits and misses but there are some incredible gems in there.

We are enjoying the series with Steven Moffat at the helm. It was great that RTD brought it back, although there were aspects of it that I didn't think were "proper" Doctor Who. I think it's closer to what I think of as proper Who under SM. Matt as the Doctor we enjoy very much. He makes an interesting and convincing Doctor, if a bit TOO manic at times. I don't really have "A" favourite Doctor. I enjoy aspects of all of them. I did grow up with Tom Baker as the Doctor in my formative years so I would say he's "my" Doctor more than the others. I was lucky enough to meet him in 1980. I did The Who Odyssey a few years back - watched every story, in order, including the reconstructions. It was an interesting project to watch the evolution and progression with each story in the original relative positions to each other. Favourite stories. Gosh. So hard to say. Some that stand out, of the existing ones, would be The Aztecs, The Tomb of the Cybermen, Inferno, Horror of Fang Rock, The Caves of Androzani, Vengeance on Varos, my son LOVES Battlefield (go Brig!), Empty Child/Doctor Dances, Impossible Planet/Satan Pit, and we too loved Vincent and the Doctor. Those aren't all of them of course but they all stand out in different ways. The movie with the 8th Doctor - take it or leave it. Do any of you guys read books/listen to audio plays?

No, I've never gotten around to that, although the early radio plays interest me, if only because Douglas Adams was involved in some of them.

I motivate myself to get on the exercise bike by listening to Big Finish audio plays while I'm on there.

I started watching Dr who at the end of Patrick Troughton's stint All the John Pertwee series - I loved his little topless car All the Tom Baker series - All the Peter Davison series Then I had a dry spell until Christopher Eccleston - only bits and pieces But I resumed with the last 2 Dr Whos I like very much Both - David Tennant & Matt Smith David Tennant is quite good and Tom Baker like in many ways Matt Smith is quirky enough to also do a great job as the latest Dr Who Over the last month I have been watching the complete - Tom Baker years of Dr Who & it finished last night That means withdrawal symptoms KK

Oh dear, I know what you mean about withdrawals. But did you see the upcoming Big Finish audio stories with Tom Baker? I'm pretty excited about that. The Fourth Doctor is adventuring again. So sad about Lis Sladen as it would have been great to have the Fourth Doctor and Sarah-Jane together again. He's done a bunch with Louise Jameson and also with Mary Tamm. I vaguely recalled that the Doctor's Daughter was played by Peter Davidson's daughter but googling that... bit of a can of worms.  Georgia Moffett, daughter of PD and Sandra Dickinson (who played Trillion in the HHGTTG TV series) is married to David Tennant.

In the TV series Peter Davison had quite a few sidekicks at various points on the show 3 girls 2 boys 1 camelion Ohh and let me be the first to say that Stargate SG1 is a close copy of the snake concept On Dr Who the snake body snatchers were called the Mara KK
