He had a look at the demo model owned by Chris and offered money to buy it

But alas it was not for sale
We'll after a few phone calls and a little arm twisting I offered to make one

The preferred Arcosteel Pasta pot set was supplied
And to complete the build -
Some parts were used from the Koffee Kosmo shop
Parts that are no longer available were invented or manufactured with home tools and made to fit
Other items needed were purchased

I've owned a iRoast2 (fluid bed roaster), Behmor1600, and a Gene Cafe. they are listed in chronological order. The iRoast2 produced a great flavor, but was too load and finicky. The Behmor1600 was easy but lost power over time, taking longer to roast after only a years use. The Gene Cafe does well, too, but it is, after 2 yrs, losing strength, too.

Of the 3, I always thought the iRoast2, when done right, produced a superior roast. The Gene Cafe I thought was a runner up.

So, I'm looking for a new roaster. Would prefer a fluid bed home roaster that can do 1 lb. I can't find anything without breaking the bank. Want something more durable than the Behmor1600 and the Gene Cafe. Fluid bed would be preferred, but drum is okay. Any suggestions?

I posted this over in Homeroasters.org but as some interested aussies may not visit over there I have started a thread here as well,

Well after many years faithful service and hundreds of Kilos roasted, its time to upgrade from the KKTO. I simply cant keep up with the increasing demand for my coffee.

I looked around at commercial machines in the 3-5KG range but its a massive outlay and after discussions with Paul from KKTO I decided to make a 2.3kg fluid bed roaster along the lines of RoasterRob's NZ designs that have featured in threads on Homeroasters.org.

Mine will be mild steel rather than stainless, it features a Duran Glass roasting chamber - 500mm by 150mm and will be fired by a Seivet Pro 86 Torch Kit which has the correct burner for this size roaster.

I am adding a chaff collector as I dont want it just spewing out the vent, I pulled an old aircleaner box out of a Toyota Landcruiser which should do the job perfectly.

I have sourced a 4" 100cfm fan, meant to be nice and quiet, a German Blauberg Turbo fan, about 36db so it should enable me to still hear the cracks.

It will pull air through the bean cooler and then blow up past the burner to fluidise the beans. I will make it with a slide gate to dump the beans.

I am also constructing a feed hopper to go on the side of the steel section above the roasting chamber with a slide gate to load the beans.

Will provide pictures as the build progresses.

Total cost of the build should come in under $1000.

The name I made up this morning given the vertical aspect of these roasters, for anyone that has no idea what I am talking about here is one of RoasterRobs ones in stainless steel,
Roasting up to 1kg. I will be interesting to see if this gets an traction in the home roasting market here in Australia because at an estimated $2000US it's a lot more practical price wise than the competition.

As if I don't already have enough on my plate I have decided to have a go at automating the KKTO.
Now, I am far from a skilled DIY'er but I have a plan and recently discovered that I have some Arduino familiar and electronically capable mates so thats a start. I've had the Arduino & LCD for a week or two and today I finally received my TC4 Shield Kit so the fun will soon begin. Soldering can't be that hard right?
I'm going to build a control box to house the Arduino and TC4 and to allow for manual control of the element and the fan in the TO. Via the PC I want to monitor, record and load roast profiles and ROR and will be trying this with both Artisan and RoastLogger.
I'll probably muck around with the Halogen version of TO as the heat does rise an drop quicker than the solid element but I've been told the halogen elements life will be greatly reduced by the constant and faster switching of power - I have no idea if this is true.

Hi all, has anyone got any tips for roasting the Monsoon beans in the Behmor?

My first lot had to be thrown out. While they didn't look burnt they were dark and oily with a lot of divots. I binned them as they tasted burnt to me.
That scared me off for a bit so I put them to one side.
I used P1 to first crack, what sounded like a long, extended first crack actually turned out to be the divots flying off- by then the damage was done.

I had a second go this morning, I used P3-C and again I got the "extended first crack" I then decided to hit cool because I suspected, rightly, that it was indeed divots flying off again.
This time the are dark, not as dark as the first lot, no oil and far less "divoted". I haven't tasted them yet but I'm not holding out much hope.

Has anyone got a tried and true profile for these beans that can be spelled out for me as I'm not having any luck?
Everything else I have done has been great.

Sue.

Ok I've traded up!

Sold my Gene Cafe and bought a Behmor 1600 plus instead

From all accounts you get better consistency in the roast, plus greater control over the variables, combined with a built in afterburner, and a significantly larger roast size (400 instead of 300gm although in theory I found that the GC often struggled to get even results when loaded to capacity)

So the new unit arrives Monday / Tuesday courtesy of the other mob, and I've had a look at a few YouTube clips

But has anyone had any experience with this beast ?

And what's the best way to approach manual roast profiles ?

Best,

Hello, let me first start by saying I'm new to the world of home roasting, and I'm still trying to find my groove. I recently built a kkto type roaster after trying unsuccessfully to get decent roasts out of a popcorn popper. I have a 1300 watt TO that I am using, and found a pasta pot set that has the approximate internal dimensions of the suggested arcosteel after the false floor has been fitted (read mine didn't need a false floor to reduce volume). I have tried several agitator types, but my roasts always come out uneven. I am preheating on thaw for 5 minutes, then cranking the heat until 1c, I then back off to 225c until I pull the beans a few minutes after depending on color.

My roasts usually have an ash taste, and will have localized uneven roasting on the beans themselves and across the roast. Not sure what else to look at to help.

Saw the results of a sample roast at Neli Coffee Roastery in Clontarf this morning from a "Handy Roaster" (Dr Mahn). The owner of Neli Coffee, who sells these, said the results were excellent, and he says he can't personally explain why they are as good as they are. Suggests it's possibly because you can see the whole roast as it's roasting, and can control the heat easily by just lifting and lowering the pan. The results I saw looked like a really nice and even roast. The pan has a lip along the top so you just swirl the beans around as they are roasting. Stainless pan with a wooden handle, looked nicely constructed. I did not do a taste test myself, but on his say-so, provided you use good quality green, you will be delighted by the outcomes. His words are that the good quality Sidamo he roasted tasted almost Geisha like. You should know however that he does obviously have a vested interest.

However for $69.00 it sounds like a good bit of fun and I reckon this could be a nice cheap and effective introduction to roasting, and looks easier to control than a popper. Works probably best with a gas burner, and those small camping units work well apparently.

The following is the link to them on the Neli Coffee website. Note: I have no personal or financial interest, just popped in there this morning while taking the Bonneville out for a spin. I rate his coffee highly, so stop in there on occasions when I'm out Redcliffe way for great coffee. http://www.nelicoffee.com.au/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=288

Hi Guys,
now that I know what I am doing in regards to the extraction, I thought I will pick your brain with equipment for roasting green beans.

Objective: always have fresh coffee in pantry without need to order 1-2kg roasted beans at a time and put in freezer.

Previous experience: popcorn roasting. Could hear first crack (very very quick). But I have been put off by the set up and mess it creates.

My time dedication: I do not want to experiment too much on roasting. I want a roaster quick and simple to use, clean and put away. Batch size around 250g at a time would be great.

I have read about these 3 home roasters in my price range:
Behmor 1600 $400
Baby Roaster FZ-RR-700 $290
I-Coffee Roaster (Korean) NEW S-100CR 2013 Model $525

Of course there is the KKTO BUT it does not seem to be available at the moment.

Other option is not to bother and keep spending money on roasted beans (and freight).

Any recommendation / shared experiences?

Firstly I would like to attest to the simplistic roasting on my modified KKTO . Roasts roll out,600-1000 grm batches are the prefered weights and are roasted by profile ,sound and smell. But for my personal use ,as I am a one person household and morning coffee only, I was given a Hot Top B with added bean mass probe as a birthday present from my family. Had some trouble coming to terms with a drum roaster with a set program pre installed and a K type probe reading the air temp. on the display. This air temp has full control over the roast duration and a maximum of 220deg when reached ejected the beans.Time on the display ranged from 0-25 minutes but never controlled the roast.Had quite some difficulty reaching 2ndC because air temp and bean temp were up to 20deg different with the latter being the lower so my preferred roast of 200deg could not be achieved .After much research and deliberations I applied my profile roasting experience by using bean temp as my base and controlling heat and fan to achieve 1stC at 174deg and 2ndC at 194deg ,approximately, on a 400grm roast.Timing is set at 24mins and and counts down and has a duration of 20mins to eject to a beautiful cs8 roast at 2ndC.I now have a documented profile of time, fan and heat to achieve my desired result for my personal satisfaction.

Hi all,
I haven't posted recently, too much work, but I read every day...
I shall visit South Africa soon to see little Janlab IV (nr 10!), and am thinking to take my Behmor as a present to a good man. (Same workload precludes me from using it now, and will likely upgrade anyhow by yearend)
Voltage in South Africa is 220 at 50Hz. I know the kit will work, all my South African stuff works here and vice versa.
So my questions to the technogurus are: will the programs and temperature profiles be affected, and how. What adjustments would be necessary?
Of course a transformer to up the voltage is an option...
Thanks,
