Hi guys, MICE is on in one month; it's a bit lengthy but thought i'd include pretty much all of the PR release, fyi:

"There’s just one month to go until the coffee industry unites to celebrate all things coffee at the Melbourne International Coffee Expo (MICE) from 30 March to 1 April.

Australia’s favourite coffee event will see all five Australian Coffee Championships under the one roof, including the Australian Barista, Brewers Cup, Pura Latte Art, Cup Tasters, and the all-new Coffee Roasting Championship to recognise roasting excellence. Hosted by the Australian Specialty Coffee Association (ASCA) this will see regional barista winners from across the country go head-to-head for the ultimate glory, with the ultimate goal of taking out the national title and representing Australia on the world stage.

This year, the World Barista Championships (WBC) will take place in Seoul from 9 – 21 November 2017. The World Brewers Cup, World Latte Art, and World Cup Tasters Championship will take place from 13 – 15 June 2017 in Budapest, and the World Coffee Roasting Championship will take place in December in Guangzhou, China.

All eyes will be on the competition stage to see who will be crowned the 2017 Australian Barista Champion. Can Hugh Kelly go back-to-back and win the Barista Championship? Will we see another World Latte Art Champion in the making? All will be revealed at MICE. “MICE is the perfect platform for people to open their minds to coffee,” says Hugh Kelly, ONA Coffee Head Trainer and reigning Australian Barista Champion. “The Australian competition is one of, if not the most, competitive national competitions in the world. There are some great ideas and approaches on display here.”

Following his Australian win in 2016 and eighth placing at the WBC in Ireland, Hugh will return for another shot at winning the title. The competing baristas must prepare four espressos, four milk beverages, and four signature drinks for sensory and technical judges to assess over a timed routine of 15 minutes.

Excluding the wildcard entries, Hugh expects his biggest rivals in the Australian Barista Championships to be Jade Jennings of Veneziano Coffee (2016 runner up), fellow ONA Coffee member and returning competitor Angus Mackie, and Matthew Lewin of Axil Coffee Roasters (2016 third place).

OK so here's the main part of the PR release from the Aust. Latte Art Champs which have just taken place in Melb.:
Sensory Lab’s Ben Morrow wins Australian Latte Art Championship

Ben Morrow of Melbourne’s Sensory Lab is the 2016 Australian Pura Latte Champion. The St Ali Family proudly took first and second place in the competition, with Shinsaku 'Shin' Fukayama of Sensory Lab winning runner up, and Jibbi Little of Skittle Lane winning third place.
The competition, hosted by the Australian Specialty Coffee Association (ASCA), attracted hundreds of supporters, tourists, and passersby at Queensbridge Square along Southbank, Melbourne from 4 – 5 March. The open air event was held in collaboration with the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival.
Caleb is the reigning WLAC, but only for a few months longer. The question now, is can Australia win the WLAC back to back?
“Of course,” Ben said. “Every country is working hard and pushing their designs to the limit, especially Korea, Japan and China. Since baristas have global access to imagery, people are learning techniques and patterns everywhere and anywhere. We’re living in a golden era of coffee in terms of techniques, technology, coffee processing, and access to quality beans. It’s no surprise to anyone that our barista talent is at an all time high. We have lifted our game again after having Caleb win the WLAC, and the exciting thing for Australia is that any of our finalists could have represented the country on the world stage.” END

I don't mean to sound like a broken record, but I rue the day when latte art champs became just about the pretty patterns, not about the coffee underneath. I remember World barista and World Latte Art champs (& free-pour masters) like Paul Bassett, Scottie Callahan and Jack Hanna, who I was pretty close to at the time, all saying the same thing: "it's not just about the pattern, it's all about the coffee underneath"… and yet, now they don't even bother to taste the underlying espresso!!

latest press release from World Coffee Events about combined championships happening in Gothenberg in Sweden:
"This year's World Brewers Cup, World Coffee Roasting Championship, World Cup Tasters Championship, World Latte Art Championship, and World Coffee in Good Spirits Championship produced by World Coffee Events (WCE) will be the highlight of the SCAE Nordic World of Coffee show, June 16-18 at the Swedish Exhibition and Congress Centre in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The 2015 World Brewers Cup (WBrC) brought to you by Hario, World Coffee Roasting Championship (WCRC) brought to you by Proaster, World Cup Tasters Championship, World Latte Art Competition (WLAC), and World Coffee in Good Spirits Championship (WCIGS) will cover over 2,000 square meters during the 3-day competition schedule, attracting an estimated 5,000 visitors. A total of 28 national brewers cup champions, 10 roasters champions, 36 cup tasters champions, 36 latte art champions, and 14 coffee and spirits champions will compete, with only one world champion emerging from each competition."

Don't know about you guys, but have to say it almost feels like overkill to me… just too many "world … championships". Maybe I'm getting to be an old fart, but I liked it when there were just WBC's and World Latte Art champs; actually the thing that killed it for me was when I was covering the World Latte art champs in Melbourne last year and realised there was nothing about the coffee - i.e. they only cared about the pretty patterns, not the quality of the coffee underneath!

Hi guys - only around 4 weeks now till MICE in Melbourne. As I mentioned some time ago, we may be able to negotiate with John from Prime Media [publisher of Beanscene] for a small space that we could use as a meeting point for crema's; the only thing is, I would only request it from John if there are enough of us wanting to make use of it...

Can I use this thread to get a rough idea of how many members are [seriously] intending to get to Melb for MICE?

cheers

Held over 2 days last weekend (11 and 12 Feb 2012).

The Standard of ACT entrants is very high.

Saturday:

The barista comp. Nine competitors, all at a very comparable level to eachother, all were well prepared and professional, a credit to their profession as well as to the comp itself.

In addition to being on the organising committee I was on the panel of judges.

Sunday:

In the morning the Latte Art Comp. Great fun, casual, less need for the kind of formality required in the barista comp. Some great work, and some less great work from the beginners, but they went in and they had a go :thumb: They will improve and will be better for having tried !

In the afternoon: The Coffee Cupping Comp. This is a blind cupping of single origins brewed by the filter method, where contestants had to pick the "odd" one of 8 groups of 3 coffees (each group = 2 the same, 1 different).

There were 7 contestants including 2 pro roasters (not me). One of my own employees did me proud, winning the Cupping Comp, and will represent the ACT at the Nationals
Latte art was on this morning and a solid showing. Adrian had a machine fail 2/3 of the way through his run.. He was able to take it like a man.

Great to see Tim A, JP and many others getting ready OR just being their to support all. Also great to see plenty of friends and work mates turning up. The V's must have almost no one at the shop...

Scotty C, Phil M, Alex T, Alix F and other judges taking the QLD heat and humidity.

Barista comps today 12:00 onwards and Sunday.

All results will be made public Sunday Afternoon.

So if ya get a chance, drop in and have a look and a chat.

I was disqualified in the application stage as it was deemed that the Judges would be too distracted by my HANSOM looks and STYLE
